Interesting. I've turned off most news and don't keep after like I used to. Why is it you think it won't work if this is the plan?
I have read that after quitting smoking, the lungs revert to their healthy state in just a few years (that is, if you haven't developed emphysema or tumors). I would think that hydrating yourself sufficiently would probably help to "clean" your lungs in as quick a way as possible.
I used to have a chart that showed how long it would take for things like the lungs to go back to being comparative to those of a non-smoker. Wish I knew where it is now... some of the more serious things took 10 or 15 years, but it was fascinating to know these things after I quit.
