Do you enjoy sitting on the sand or standing on a cliff and just looking at the beautiful ocean? Or, are you the type who just has to jump in and ride the waves or have a good old swim?

Closest thing I have is the Great Lakes. Jump in once and see how cold it is -- then you'll just enjoy the view and walking on the beaches.

I absolutely love the ocean! Doesn't matter where it is, either, but I kind of like the Golden Isles of Georgia a little more than the other spots.

Easy question for me... I don't know how to swim so watching the incredible ocean is what I like to do.

I'm not allowed on cliffs. I have this overwhelming urge to jump. But I love the ocean and I just jump in.

Oh my, Frankie, I hope you've never acted on that particular overwhelming urge!
My overwhelming ocean urge is to swim past the breakers and watch the waves hit the beach from the other side.

I have been to the ocean only once. I am much more comfortable sitting on the beach ans watching the waves roll in and out. I tried standing in the water but, since I have always lived land locked, found it a bit disturbing.

I think listening to it is almost as calming as watching it.

    Yes Boardmaker, you're right!
We live a couple of miles from the ocean, and at night, we can hear it. I love to wake up in the middle of the night and listen to the waves. It's a great way to get back to sleep, lulled by the ocean.

You're very right... one of my favorite things to do is sit on the balcony when we're at the ocean and just listen. It's especially nice in the morning when the fishing boats are going out and dolphins are playing right before the sun comes up.

I hope you don't just "jump in" here on the east coast where the shark problem in certain areas is getting worse by the year! Swimming in a safe area is much better than being shark bait. And cliffs... no, I don't like cliffs at all.

Sharks don't bother me, I have a law degree. It's professional courtesy.

No, I always make sure about the shark conditions before I get in. I saw Jaws.

Thanks, Frankie. Now I know why my father is eighty five years old and swims in the ocean with such impunity.:D

Actually the truth is that sharks flee from lawyers. They are afraid we will sue them for harassment, racism or file some sort of hate crime violation against them.

I lived on Vancouver Island logging and commercial fishing for 24 years. The last time I jumped in the ocean was in the winter when a friend was drowning to pull him out.It was dark and so cold I thought I was going to die. That is when I became a beach person.

Hehe Funny stuff! Glad to hear that you check the conditions. It's always shocking how close to the shore some of those attacks are actually happening.

How wonderful for you... but moreso for your friend! Isn't it a marvelous feeling to know that we were in the right place at the right time and made a difference in someone's life?

My father is about the most boring man in the world, and as we know sharks need to keep moving to stay alive, their sense of self-preservation sends them swimming off immediately.

    Old Logger,
That is an outstanding reason to just jump right in and I'm so glad you were in the right place at the right time.

The same friend and I were heading up Johnson strait another time, when we hit a cross swell about three feet high.Basically this is a speedbump on water. He was steering the boat and I was leaning on the wheelhouse talking to him when we hit the swell.I ended up being tossed about twenty feet sideways over the water.I yelled and he threw the boat into neutral, grabbed a 2" hauser line and jumped in towards me.I yelled 'What are you doing, you can't swim?"
He yelled back"No,but you can,so get us back to the boat!"
We managed to get to the side and grabbed on.Then the rope slipped off the boat into the water. The day before another boat that had tied up to us had borrowed the rope and when they brought it back they just looped it around our towpost without tying it on.Just our weight and friction kept us alive.A few lears later he died.I miss him.
I've always believed in karma. What goes around comes around.

Karma, ki jai. I am also a firm believer in Karma.
That's a very good friend that says he can't swim, but you can get the two of you back to the boat once he's gotten to you. Sounds like a friendship of several lives. I think you'll be seeing him again.
